Scylla and Raelle's Chance At A Future
SPOILERS FOR THE FIRST THREE EPISODES OF MOTHERLAND: FORT SALEM
When I wrote about the first episode of Motherland: Fort Salem a couple of weeks ago, I didn't realize how invested I would get in such a short time. But alas, here I am, hopelessly devoted to a couple doomed to fall apart by the season finale.
There's essentially two ways the show can go. Scylla is redeemed or Scylla is a lost cause. There's thousands of different ways either of those could happen, but those are the generic paths. So let's look at some evidence for both.
1) Too Far Gone
It is has been made inarguably clear that Scylla is evil, a member of the Spree. We've seen her use the face burning technique to trick Raelle into trusting her, communicate with the infamous balloon that is associated with the Spree, and unfortunately now she's one-upped herself and killed her ex-boyfriend.
Scylla has now proven that she'll go to any length to avenge her parents death, including manipulation and murder. Scylla seduced Porter before killing him, making it plausible that she would be willing to do the same in the case of Raelle. She even told the Spree balloon "she's mine", insinuating that she was instructed to befriend or gain a form of control over Raelle (who we know to be mysteriously powerful and already suspicious of the military aka a perfect recruit for the Spree).
She has also not hesitated to manipulate Raelle before, transforming herself into "Helen Graves" (which is a very creative name for someone who has death powers, can you hear my sarcasm Freeform) to convince Raelle to be more patient and give her time to open up. While she does seem to honestly open up in episode three, clearly there are still more things she's hiding.
As of right now we have no idea what the Spree or Scylla's final plans are. We do know that Raelle now has access to Porter’s memories, meaning there is a chance Scylla will be exposed and they may break up as soon as next episode. That's no fun though and for something as thoroughly set up as their relationship, I doubt that this is going to be the end
2) Love Changes
Now with all of my negativity and doubts laid out, let's get to daydreaming.
"She's got her mission, she's an idealist... but when there's a truthful enough... connection, then all of a sudden she's questioning and starting to have other priorities. And as a passionate person she's now falling passionately in love... and that may have a big impact on the world." - Amalia Holm (Scylla)
So that's it right? Case closed. The actress admits that Scylla has honestly fallen for Raelle and that's going to have a big impact on her loyalties to the Spree. Well, not quite but it does give us a bit more hope than just subtext (which I will be reading into in 5, 4, 3, 2...)
After Scylla kills Porter, she casually walks down to check on his body. You can see her hands in her pockets and no real urgency in her movement (first half of the picture). However, when she notices Raelle has attempted to heal him and passed out, she becomes worried (second half of the picture).
And that's where the hope comes from. Scylla has lived with only hatred and determination the past few years, without creating bonds. It's easier to want to burn the world down with no one in it that you care about. However, now it appears that she has some hesitation when it comes to Raelle's safety. She's fallen in love. I mean, clearly:
So when Raelle inevitably sides with the military, it's going to be up to Scylla to decide whether she wants to continue her mission or protect Raelle. However, it's unknown if she'll side with Raelle, sacrifice herself last minute, or be evil until the bitter end. I don't have a definitive answer for this argument, but tune in this Wednesday to episode four to anxiously nail bite with me.

I mean, clearly:
(Scylla evilly melting at Raelle's touch)
(Scylla nefariously holding Raelle's hand)
(Scylla pretending she feels guilty about lying to Raelle... even though there's no one to see it... she's just a really method actress)
So when Raelle inevitably sides with the military, it's going to be up to Scylla to decide whether she wants to continue her mission or protect Raelle.
